How to apply

1
Go to your nearest SASSA office

Bring someone with you if you need help. SASSA offices must assist elderly people — ask to be helped if you struggle to stand in a long queue.

2
Tell them you want to apply for the Old Age Grant

A SASSA official will sit with you, check your documents, and help you fill in the form. This is all free.

3
Have your fingerprints taken

SASSA will take your fingerprints to confirm your identity. This is normal and required.

4
Wait for approval

SASSA must decide within 90 days. They will send you an SMS. If approved, you will receive backpay from the date you applied.

5
Collect your money

You can collect at a Post Office, a SASSA pay point, or choose to have it paid into your bank account every month.

schedule

You should apply as soon as you turn 60. SASSA will only pay backpay from the date you applied — not from when you turned 60. Do not wait.
