SASSA Means Test 2026 — What It Is and How It Affects Your Grant

Before SASSA approves most grants, they run a means test — a check of your income and assets to confirm you genuinely need support. Understanding the limits before you apply saves time and avoids surprises.

Ingaba i-SASSA ihlola i-akhawunti yakho yebhanki?

Yes — and more thoroughly than most people realise. SASSA cross-references your ID number against:

account_balanceBanking records — any account with your ID number attached, checked every month for SRD
receipt_longSARS tax data — employment income, IRP5 data, business registrations
workUIF database — whether you are registered and receiving UIF payments
schoolNSFAS database — current or recent student funding
volunteer_activismOther SASSA grants — to prevent double-dipping between grant types

Important for SRD applicants: The R624 threshold catches all deposits, not just salary. A family member sending you R700 for groceries, a stokvel payout, a refund from a retailer — all of these can trigger a decline for that month. If this happens, you can appeal with an explanation of what the deposit was.

Ndingafaneleka nangona ndifumana ingeniso ethile?

For most grants (not SRD), partial income does not automatically disqualify you — it may reduce the amount you receive. SASSA applies a sliding scale for Old Age and Disability grants: if your income is below the threshold but not zero, you receive a reduced grant rather than nothing.

For example: a pensioner receiving R800/month from a company pension may still qualify for a partial Old Age Grant, because their income is well below the R8,990 threshold. Always declare your income honestly — SASSA will find it anyway, and false declarations can lead to permanent disqualification.

Yintoni engabalwa njengengeniso?

SASSA makes specific deductions from your income before comparing it to the means test threshold:

  • UIF contributions deducted from your salary
  • Medical aid contributions
  • Income tax you pay
  • Pension fund contributions
  • The value of your primary residence (home you live in)
  • Basic household furniture and appliances
