My SASSA Grant Was Stopped — What to Do
If your SASSA grant suddenly stopped or you did not get your money this month, do not panic. There are several common reasons this happens, and most can be fixed. This guide walks you through each one.
First step: Check your status before assuming anything is wrong. Sometimes there is a payment delay and your money will arrive within a few days.
Common reasons a grant stops
SASSA requires grant recipients to confirm their details every 1–2 years. If you missed your reconfirmation appointment, your grant is suspended until you go in. Call SASSA to find out when yours is due.
If SASSA discovers your income or assets now exceed the limit for your grant type, they will stop the grant. This can happen if you got a new job, received an inheritance, or got married.
If you changed banks or your account number changed, your payment cannot go through. Update your banking details at any SASSA office or at www.sassa.gov.za.
If you were admitted to a government-funded hospital or care home for more than 3 months, your grant is suspended. It can be reinstated when you leave.
If someone else tried to access your grant fraudulently, SASSA may have frozen your account to protect you. Visit a SASSA office with your ID to resolve this.
For the Child Support Grant, if the child has turned 18, passed away, or is no longer in your care, the grant stops. For the Disability Grant, your condition may have been reassessed.
What to do right now
Go to srd.sassa.gov.za or call 0800 60 10 11 to check your status. Sometimes it is a delay, not a permanent stop.
Bring your ID. Ask them specifically: "Why was my grant stopped?" They must tell you the reason in writing.
Update bank details if that is the issue. Bring income proof if it is an income check. Ask about a reconfirmation appointment if that is needed.
Get everything in writing. Ask for a reference number. This protects you if there is a dispute.
If SASSA stopped your grant incorrectly, you have 90 days to appeal. Ask for the appeal form at any SASSA office.
Important: SASSA will not automatically restart your grant. You must go in person or call them. The sooner you do it, the sooner your grant restarts.
