SASSA — Frequently Asked Questions

SASSA typically takes up to 3 months (90 days) to process a grant application. For the SRD grant, approval can be faster — sometimes within 2 weeks. You receive an SMS once a decision is made. If declined, you have 90 days to appeal at your nearest SASSA office.

No — you cannot receive UIF benefits and the SRD R370 grant simultaneously. The SRD is for people not receiving any UIF. However, you can receive Old Age, Child Support, or Disability grants alongside UIF — those are means-tested separately.

Common reasons for SRD decline: income above R624/month found in bank records, you are receiving UIF or NSFAS, your ID could not be verified by Home Affairs, or the phone number entered does not match your ID number records. Appeal at srd.sassa.gov.za within 90 days and provide bank statements showing no income.

It depends on the grant. For the SRD R370: maximum R624/month income. For the Old Age Grant (2026): single applicants up to R8,990/month (R107,880/year). For Child Support Grant: the caregiver's income must be below R5,000/month (single) or R10,000/month (married). Always declare your full income — SASSA cross-checks with SARS and banks.
