How the medical aid tax credit works
SARS gives you a fixed monthly tax credit (not a deduction) based on how many people are on your medical aid. This credit is subtracted directly from your tax bill — it reduces what you owe, regardless of your income.
2026/27 credit amounts:
• Main member: R376/month
• First dependant: R376/month
• Each additional dependant: R254/month
This is better than a deduction because it reduces your actual tax rand-for-rand, not just your taxable income.
